There is more room for happiness.

I find happiness even in the small things.

 

squint

- to partly close your eyes in order to see more clearly:

self-reliant

- not needing help or support from other people:

 

Single parents have to be self-reliant and inventive.

 

self-determination

- the ability or power to make decisions for yourself, especially the power of  a nation to decide  how it will be governed

 

Such a cultural orientation would downplay traditional notions of self-determination and the work ethic.
